VA Compensation and Pension (C&P) Exams

A VA Compensation & Pension (C&P) exam is a medical evaluation used to determine the service-connection and severity of a veteran's disability for rating purposes, which influences monthly compensation and eligibility for VA healthcare benefits.

What to Expect

 Purpose

  • To evaluate medical conditions related to your military service
  • To determine if a condition is service-connected
  • To assess the severity of your condition
  • To help the VA decide disability compensation benefits

Does it initiate treatment?

  • The exam is not a treatment visit
  • A provider reviews your medical history and may perform a physical exam
  • You may be asked questions about symptoms, daily functioning, and how the condition affects work and life
  • Some exams may include questionnaires or basic diagnostic testing

Important Notes

  • Attend your appointment as scheduled
  • Bring a list of medications and relevant medical records (if requested)
  • Be honest and thorough when describing your symptoms
  • The examiner does not decide your benefits — Medical findings are submitted to the VA for review.

Reserve Health Readiness Program (RHRP)

RHRP

The Reserve Health Readiness Program (RHRP), administered through the U.S. Department of Defense, provides medical readiness services for members of the Reserve and National Guard to assess fitness for duty.

What to Expect

  • Review of medical history
  • Physical examination (if required)
  • Hearing and vision testing
  • Immunizations (if due)
  • Laboratory testing (as ordered)

After

  • These exams are for readiness purposes, not disability determination
  • Results are shared with military command for readiness tracking
  • Follow-up care may be recommended if concerns are identified
